Benefits You Can Expect From Email Encryption
Encryption is the process of scrambling
information in such a way that it can only be unscrambled by the intended
recipient who has a decryption key. Almost all modern chat communication
systems (such as WhatsApp) have some form of encryption but email, being one of
the oldest online tools has relatively little protection. Sending unencrypted
emails is unsafe and if you’re are a business you are not only putting yourself
at risk but also your customers, suppliers and co-workers.
End-to-end secure emails encryption prevents your
emails from being read while they are in transit. Many services encrypt emails
“at rest” when they are in your inbox but not when they are being sent.
End to end encryption means that the email is
encrypted at all points in the process when written, when in transit and when it
has arrived.
If someone was to intercept an unencrypted email,
they would be able to read the information contained, including sensitive
private email. They could also alter the contents and then forward the message
to the original recipient. This is incredibly dangerous for businesses as
hackers may change details like bank account numbers on an invoice to trick you
into paying the hacker rather than your supplier.
If someone intercepts an encrypted email, all
they see is a mass of scrambled numbers, letters and symbols.
It is worth noting that you can only ever be
responsible for the security and encryption. If you send an encrypted email to
a client and that client’s machine itself is compromised, then the email is
compromised. Even with encryption activated you should still be cautious and
follow common sense when sending and receiving emails. Be careful of what
information you include in emails, do not open attachments or click on links
from unknown sources and avoid sending sensitive information over digital
channels where possible. It is worth the inconvenience of a phone call to have
the security of knowing your payment details are not being intercepted.
